2012 Del Mar Mile Race Favorites

Jeranimo - Jeranimo returned to prominence most recently with a win last time out in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile after a decent second in the race before - the Grade 3 San Francisco Mile at Golden Gate. His other results in 2012 include a fourth in the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe and a second at the Grade 2 San Gabriel on January 16. Despite flying under the radar a tad this year, he has finished in the money in three of four races - he should contend Sunday and be a handful for the rest of the field.

Mr. Commons - Mr. Commons won the Grade 2 Arcadia Stakes on February 4 at Santa Anita to follow a win at the Sir Beaufort Stakes on that same track, on December 26. Since that win Mr. Commons has finished second in two straight races - the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile Stakes and the Grade 2 American Handicap. Last time out was his worst performance this year - a fourth in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Hollywood Park on June 30. He has finished first or second in seven of his last nine starts and is consistent as they come. Mr. Commons hasn't won since February - something that trainer John Sherreffs hopes to change Sunday.

Del Mar Mile 2012 | Remaining Field Entries

Norvsky - finished fifth in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap March 3 and has had mixed results since - an eighth place finish in the Grade 2 Charles Town Classic was followed by a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming and a win last time out in the California Dreamin' Handicap here on July 22. He has gotten better as the year has rolled on and he did beat Jeranimo in the Grade 2 San Gabriel in January - Norvsky could be a factor Sunday!

Obviously - shipped from Europe to start the year, Obviously has six starts in North America and has placed in all. Last time out was a win in an Allowance Optional Claiming here on August 2 to follow a pair of seconds - the Robert K. Kerlan Memorial and an Allowance both at Hollywood Park. He has yet to participate in any graded stakes races states-side but he has looked decent in the races he has started.

Calimonoco - This six-year-old has had mixed results in 2012 - a win in the minor Sidd Finch Stakes, a second in the Wickerr Stakes last time out here, a pair of fourths in the Grade 2 Arcadia Stakes and Grade 3 San Francisco Mile and a disappointing seventh two races ago in the Grade 2 American Handicap. Calimonoco has been inconsistent and despite a close third in the 2011 Del Mar Mile and a decent track record at Del Mar, he is very difficult to trust Sunday.

Tale of a Champion - has five career starts with four wins but will step up this Sunday in his graded stakes debut. He enters the Del Mar Mile having won two straight including the minor Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint Stakes at Calder on July 7.
