Canadian Turf Stakes at Gulfstream Park

Dave Bond

Las Vegas, NV -- The 46th running of the Grade 3 Canadian Turf Stakes comes our way this Saturday, March 3rd from Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. The race is open to horses four years old and upward that are willing to go 1 mile on Gulfstream's turf track.

A field of eight will saddle up in the 10th race on Gulfstream's Saturday schedule with a post time of 5:17 PM ET. Included in that field are two horses that have absolutely owned the turf course at Gulfstream over the past couple of seasons - Little Mike and Data Link will meet for the first time but between them have won eight of their nine starts on this track. All other horses figure to be chasers in this race although there are a few quality potential sleepers.

Below is a breakdown of the eight entries and the credentials that brought them to the Canadian Turf Stakes.

Canadian Turf Stakes Race Favorites

Little Mike - has won four straight races and five of the last six. Little Mike is the defending champion here - the Canadian Turf was just one of five wins that he had on this course in 2011. Among Little Mike's wins were the Canadian Turf, the Grade 3 Ft. Lauderdale Stakes and the Grade 3 Appleton Stakes on April 3rd. Most recently, Little Mike was very impressive in winning the Florida Sunshine Millions Turf. Little Mike is terrific on this course and enters the race with some serious momentum.

Data Link - is another horse that absolutely loves the Gulfstream track having won three straight races on this course. Data Link broke Maiden at Aqueduct back in November of 2012 but has more recently posted wins in a couple of Allowance races here at Gulfstream.

Remaining Field Entries

Mutual Trust - This will be Mutual Trust's second start on American soil after winning three of five races in France. Mutual Trust finished fifth in the Grade 3 Ft. Lauderdale Stakes at Gulfstream on January 14th.

Doubles Partner - Todd Pletcher trained Doubles Partner finished a respectable third at the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill Downs last time out in May and had a win March in the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Stakes. This will be Doubles Partner's first race since in nine months.

Seruni - This will be Seruni's first race of 2012 after closing out 2011 with a win at an Allowance Optional Claiming race at Gulfstream in November and a second in an Allowance at Tampa Bay Downs in October.

Beau Choix - will also race for the first time in 2012 after closing out 2011 with a couple of disappointing results - a fifth in the Third Martini Stakes at Belmont in September and a tenth in the Grade 2 Bernard Baruch Handicap at Saratoga in August.

Trend - has only two wins in 12 career starts - that win being an Allowance race at Gulfstream on January 19th. Trend is a definite long shot in the Canadian Turf Stakes.

Perfect Footprint - has 30 career starts with eight wins, six seconds and three third place finishes. Last time out Perfect Footprint was ninth in a Starter Allowance at Gulfstream December 15th and before that was fourth in the Grade 3 Tropical Turf Handicap at Calder on December 2nd.
