Appalachian Stakes at Keeneland

Dave Bond

Las Vegas, NV -- The Grade 3 Appalachian Stakes comes our way from Keeneland this Thursday April 19th as part of Keeneland's ongoing spring meet. Three year old fillies will go one mile on Keeneland's turf track in search of their share of the $100,000 purse.

Nine entries including multiple stakes winners will saddle up in Race 8 on Keelenland`s Thursday schedule with a post time of 4:42 PM.

Here is a breakdown of the nine starters and the recent performances that brought them to this Grade 3 event:

Appalachian Stakes Race Favorites

Somali Lemonade - will be making her 2012 debut after a rather disappointing sixth in the Grade 2 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on November 4th at Churchill Downs. Somali Lemonade won her other two career starts - the Grade 3 JP Morgan Chase Jessamine Stakes on this track in October and a Maiden Special Weight score at Belmont Park on September 11th. Somali Lemonade is fast and is one of two small favorites in the race.

Dayatthespa - has won both starts of 2012 - the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride Stakes on March 11th and the Sweetest Chant Stakes on January 22nd both at Gulfstream. Dayatthespa ended her 2011 campaign in disappointing fashion however - a ninth place finish at the Grade 2 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in November. She has three wins and a second place finish in five career starts.

Remaining Field Entries

Regalo Mia - could be the dark horse in the Appalachian - Regalo Mia has placed in all four career starts including a second last time out in the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride Stakes at Gulfstream on March 11th and a third before that in the Florida Oaks. Regalo Mia has one win (a Maiden Special Weight), two seconds and a third in her career.

Andrew's Girl - has only two career starts - both wins. Andrew`s Girls posted an impressive win last time out in the OBS Championship (Filly Division) Stakes at Ocala Training center on March 12th and before that won a Maiden Special Weight race at Tampa Bay Downs on January 18th - both results coming on synthetic surfaces.

Lemon Splendor - has won two of three of her career starts - two in a row including the Swirlaway Stakes last time out on December 29th and a Maiden Special Weight race before that on December 4th, both at Aqueduct.

Firehouse Red - has five career starts and has placed in all - two wins, a second and two third place finishes. Most recently Firehouse Red finished second in the Allen LaCombe Memorial Stakes at Fair Grounds on March 10th and before that was second in an Allowance Optional Claiming on that same track.

Dream Pegasus - has two wins and a second in five career starts. Last time out she was fourth in the Valdale Stakes at Turfway on February 25th and before that won an Allowance at Churchill Downs on November 27th.

Little Sadie - has a staggering eight starts already in her career but has posted just one win - a Maiden Special Weight race in her second start at Ellis park in October. Most recently Little Sadie has two-fifth place finishes in a sixth in her last three starts.

Biogio's Gift - is another horse with a ton of racing under her belt - 11 career starts with two wins and four second place finishes. She had a string of second place finishes in Allowance races before a win in her most recent outing - an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Turfway on March 16th.
