2013 Jim Dandy Stakes Race Favorites

Palace Malice - Todd Pletcher trained colt is coming off his enormous 3 1/4 length win in the Belmont Stakes June 8 after a disappointing twelfth in the Kentucky Derby. He also had a seventh in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds March 30, and was a nice second in the Blue Grass Stakes April 13 behind Java's War. He has been a bit "hit or miss" in his short career so far but his win in the Belmont has opened absolutely everyone's eyes. He is the 5-2 favorite for the Jim Dandy and will be looking to give his trainer a sixth Jim Dandy title.

Mylute - was last seen running a very good third ahead of Orb and behind Itsmyluckyday in the Preakness Stakes May 18 after an OK fifth in the Derby and a second to Revolutionary in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby March 30. He's also had a third in the Grade 3 Delta Downs Jackpot November 17 followed by an Allowance Optional Claiming score December 26 and an ugly seventh in the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes February 23. He has just one Allowance Optional Claiming score since August but has been very competitive in every start for trainer Thomas Amoss. Because of that he is the 7-2 second choice on the morning line.

Jim Dandy Stakes 2013 | Remaining Field Entries

Freedom Child - had a superb win in the Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes May 11 but stumbled to a thirteenth last time out in the Belmont Stakes for trainer Thomas Albertini. Other career results include a tenth in the Wood Memorial, a MSW win in wire-to-wire fashion by 5 1/4 lengths at Gulfstream March, a third, a second and an eighth respectively to start his career. Hopes are that he can return to his Peter Pan winning form and not revert to the form that saw him finish tenth or higher in his other two graded stakes races. Freedom Child is the 4-1 third choice on the morning line.

Code West - Bob Baffert pupil had a nice second place finish by a nose to I've Struck a Nerve but ahead of Palace Malice in the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds February 23 and followed that with a sixth in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby. Since then he has two Allowance starts - a win at Pimlico May 18 followed a second May 4 at Churchill Downs. Last time out however, he stepped up for his biggest win to date - a terrific score in the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs June 15. He now has three wins, four seconds and two third place finishes in 10 career starts and sits at 6-1 odds for the Jim Dandy.

Moreno - Eric Guillot pupil raced to a seventh in the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes in August 2012 in his second career start and concentrated on MSW races in his next eight starts. His only win in those races came two back by 6 1/4 lengths at Belmont Park June 8. Most recently he stepped back into graded stakes company and he won the Grade 2 Dwyer Stakes in impressive fashion July 6. That win opened a few eyes - he is listed as the fifth choice on the morning line at 10-1 odds.

Will Take Charge - was one of the only colts to race all three legs of the Triple Crown finishing eighth in the Kentucky Derby, seventh in the Preakness and tenth in the Belmont. This after an impressive win in the Grade 2 Rebel at Oaklawn Park in March. A lot was expected of this colt for trainer D. Wayne Lukas but he has fallen flat on the biggest stages so far. He has placed in just three of his last seven starts and hasn't placed since that win March 16. He is the co-sixth choice on the morning line at 12-1 odds along with...

Vyjack - won his first four career starts including a pair of graded stakes scores at Aqueduct earlier this year. He then finished third in the Wood Memorial and was eighteenth in the Kentucky Derby for trainer Rudy Rodriguez. Last time out was an eighth in the Belmont Stakes. He had some hype heading into the Triple Crown but failed to live up to it. Hopes are that a slightly smaller stage will help Vyjack succeed.

Bashaar - Daniel Petz trained colt broke maiden at Oaklawn Park in March and followed that with his only other career victory - an Allowance Optional Claiming also at Oaklawn April 4. He made his stakes debut next and finished ninth in the Grade 2 American Turf Stakes May 3 and was an OK second in the minor Prairie Mile Stakes here June 1. Last time out was another decent result - a third in the Grade 3 Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows June 29. He has two wins, a second and a third place finish in eight career starts - all of those results coming in his last five starts.

Looking Cool - has three wins and two second place finishes in 10 career starts and is coming off his best career result - an impressive win in the Grade 3 Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows June 29. Before that was an eighth in the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes June 15 at Churchill Downs after a second in the minor Northern Spur Stakes at Oaklawn Park April 13. He now has three wins and two second place finishes in 10 career starts.

Perfect Title - Dallas Stewart trained colt races in stakes company for the first time Saturday after seven career starts produced two wins, a second and two third place finishes. Last time out was an Allowance score at Churchill Downs June 7 after a pair of fourths and a MSW score at Fair Grounds in February. Saturday marks an enormous step up in competition. Perfect Title is the longest shot on the board at 20-1 odds.
